Biography

I joined the department in September 2012 as a Chancellor's Fellow, and I have been a lecturer since June 2015. Previously I was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Northern Institute of Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen. I did my PhD at the University of Texas at Austin, where I was supervised by Mark Sainsbury, and my undergraduate and masters at the University of St Andrews.

Research

I work mostly on issues in epistemology, philosophy of language and philosophy of mind, and I have a longstanding but largely underdeveloped interest in Wittgenstein. I recently finished a series of papers and a book critically engaging with the knowledge first approach to epistemology and related areas of mind and language, while my current research concerns first-person thought, particularly the phenomenon of immunity to error through misidentification, self-knowledge, and related issues concerning how we attribute mental states to ourselves and to others. I have also started working on politically-charged applications of speech act theory, and their relation to issues in epistemology.

Teaching

In 2015-6 I will be teaching the Philosophy of Fiction, and contributing to the lectures for Feminism, and in 2016-7 I will be teaching Fiction again, plus Knowledge, Ignorance, and Power. In previous years I have co-taught Mind, Matter, and Language, An Introduction to Philosophical Methodology, Themes in Epistemology, Scepticism, and History of Analytic Philosophy.

Office Hours

My office hours are 11-12 on Fridays or by arrangement.
