Description

An Innovative Learning Week (ILW) event: David Adger, Professor of Linguistics, Queen Mary, University of London will be giving two sessions on the linguistic properties of Gaelic:

  • 14:00 - 'What's with all those h's? Connecting grapheme to phoneme in Gaelic orthography'
This session looks at how the Gaelic writing system, which looks quite chaotic, actually is immensely systematic in the way it connects written letters to the sound system of the language.
  • 15:30 - 'Invisible verb phrases in Gaelic'
In Gaelic, the subject separates the verb from its object, unlike in English, where they are together. Does this mean that the basic structure of Gaelic is different from that of English? In this session, we'll see that the two languages are a lot more alike than they first appear.
